I came up with this freezing ice idea when I was playing around with the left over ice in the freezer. Then I start exploring the movement of water, which is due to the gravity of course. It's a basic knowledge that gravity is a force that make water fall toward the Earth, just like everything in this world.

What I see in the unpredictable form of water is that it's freeform with distorted reflection and can be totally different depends on the force you pour or volume of water or even the form of container.

So I start taking photo from different angle and some close-up.

And made some 3d models from different materials to find the right one to work with for the final idea.

I planned to make an ice sculpture of the falling water form.

Why?

- Everyone know that water just flow/drop/fall and that's it .. then I came up with this idea of 'freezing' the water. Water is a liquid, and the property of liquid is that it flows ~ so water cant take shape.

- Ice is a solid, it will keep its shape until it melts.

Why ice ?

- Well I choose to work with ice because it's a solid stage of water.. the main element in this project and in my observation. And it's a best one that give a feeling of water, (of course because it's water just in a solid form) . It also communicate my concept best. Ice is not a permanent model, which will serve the concept of 'nothing will last forever', this form is a movement of water, so when ice melts it become water.

I'd like to freeze the moment of water falling with ice, because people normally think of water as a fluid form that won't stay long, but if I freeze it in a moving form people might wonder what happened to it and when time pass by the ice would melt and they will suddenly know it's ice.

I got this idea from the 'ice in ice' experiment ..

which is to freeze the liquid form in solid state !

i'll make molds to freeze 'boiled water' (it will looks crystal clear after freezing)

by using the play dough.

This ice had been in my freezer for a week already..

I got the 'ice in ice' idea from this left over piece of ice

And I found that it melt slower than the น้ำแข็งหลอด

I continue with the experiment I did last week

using dyed ice, which is a lots easier to observe the melting of it

I don't know why but those steam when you take a warm shower/bath interest me

We see "visible" light wavelengths bounced back at us from the water...

Water and Ice experiment

Water is our theme for the third module for design II class. My first activity is to experiment with ice and water, concentrate on 'transformation'. I have done several experiments, using water, ice, dry ice and dyed ice. Also some research on water.

Water is a chemical substance, composed of hydrogen and oxygen, known as H2O. Water refers only to its liquif form, the solid form called ice and gaseous state called water vapor. Our Earth's surface got cover with 71% water which is almost ¾ . Water on Earth moves continually through the water cycle, which involves evaporation or transpiration, precipitation and runoff. We, human need clean drinking water to survive. Pure H₂O is tasteless and odorless. Water also have many usages, domestic use, commercial use, public supply use, industrial use, mining use, electricity production, wastewater treatment and more.

Ice, the solid state of water. Ice is denser than water, so it float. There is an easy common way to make ice, which is putting water into any container, freeze it. Talking about ice, reminds me of the hot issue today, global warming and the polar ice melting. As everyone know that water covers almost ¾ area of Earth's surface, so if these ice melted, there will be a disaster. I also have found 'melting men' the thousand ice sculptures which were left to thaw in the sun to highlight the climate change in Arctic. This happened in Berlin square last year, made by a female artist. And there're many more beautiful ice sculptures in Harbin, the ice lantern festival.

The experiments I had done are fried ice, dry ice bubbles, dry ice balloon, dyed ice in warm water, salt on ice, glowing ice cube, quick ice trick and screaming coin. Actually there are some more cool experiments that I want to do, such as hot ice, but I cant find the chemical and dry ice cream, which sounds to be a very yummy experiment.

Dry ice, I experimented with dry ice by putting it into warm water, collect the carbon dioxide that evaporate by using a rubber glove (instead of balloon). And the other one is adding some soap solution, bubbles will be produce, the speed depends on the size of dry ice, temperature of water, amount of water and amount of soap solution. And the easy experiment using coin (any metal) press it onto the dry ice you will hear a noise like the coin is screaming.

The glowing ice cube is very easy to make, and it looks really nice in dark (with blacklight on). Just break a highlighter pen, squeeze the ink out mix with water and make ice. From my research tonic water also glow in dark (with blacklight on) but in light blue colour, unlike my experiment which I use yellow fluorescent ink

Dyed ice, I use red food colouring mix with water and make ice. Then put it into warm water, observe the water convection more easily with red colour. I enjoy watching the ink diffuse into water, so as this experiment. It would be really nice if I could continue with more colour or warmer water or better pigment.

There is a fun trick I found in youtube, quick ice. The trick is that you hide a sponge at the bottom of the mug, then put an ice in. Then show this to your friends that you can make ice in 3 secoud. Pour little amount of water, make sure that sponge could absorb it all. Act like you got some magic, count 1, 2, 3 then pour out the ice, make sure that your friends didn't see sponge and no water came out.

For the first activity, I found it very fun and interesting. It give me a feeling of experimenting in science class, although there is no chemical added.

5. Let's make an ice in 3 sec !!

(this is a trick.. very easy trick indeed)

first get a mug (with a sponge at the bottom) and the already made ice on top

when you play this with your friend ... add some water into the mug (just little amount)

pretend that you use some magic ... and count 3 second

pour out the ice .. make sure your friends didn't notice the sponge underneath

so i try with the normal trick.. the screaming coin

1. Design elements

For this project we were asked to design 6 pieces of work using the element's characteristic to create the word

ie, using line to create a word 'line'

the six elements are line, shape and form, colour, space, texture and value

2. Design elements inspired from sound

We were given 6 sounds to be inspired from, then create the work using the same elements of the previous project

3. Design principle (insect theme)

For this project I created 10 pieces of work to do with the given insect and its characteristic

the task is to make a shape of insect using its character

but I've to concern of design principles too, for example pattern, design elements, balance, etc

'cicada' is my insect

although it was a tough time working with insect which I really hate

but I've got through it

'let me (go) free'

I got inspired by the sound that I record the birds singing

As you listen to the sound, the birds didn't seem to sing so happily

they are tortured in a little cage

So this 'let me (go) free' is in a paper cage form

showing many colourful birds on one side

which represent how we think of those pretty birds in a little cage

but who know what they feel... the black birds side then represent sadness of them

I used clip so you could let those birds be free anytime you want, just take the clip off

Birds -

In movies, cartoons and RPGs, nothing says “Good Morning!” like a couple of birds chirping. Except of course someone actually saying “Good Morning!” But I’d rather not have birds as pets if it means locking them up in a cage. Plus I’d have to clean up their poop. So I’d rather have nendo’s music-cage – it’s a wireless speaker that resembles a bird cage. Sweet. You can connect it to a lamp’s socket on your ceiling so it hangs down, or simply set it on a table or even on the floor; there’s nothing inside for your cats to terrorize anyway.

,, as the sound I chose is about birds, and my idea is to create a work that have birds and cages together

,, I found this cage speaker very interesting in shape and form

I tried searching for different styles of cage.. I found these necklaces bird's cage very cute

and the little cage is not too fantasy like these cages

Map to go is the map on the coffee cup

why ? - because I want it to be practical for everybody

as my topic is the refreshment shop on the way to BTS

so I use the object that really reflect my topic

Sometimes holding a cold drink your hands with get too cold

so this map could also be use instead of tissue paper

& you might wanna follow the way to find another shop..

I thought about how to promote the shop together with the map

and the gimmick at the bottom is the solution

i put all the name and place in each circle

this could be further use for discount coupon or advertisement
